Ten Thousand Villages creates opportunities for artisans in developing countries who would otherwise be unemployed or underemployed to earn income by bringing their products and stories to our markets through long-term, fair trading relationships. The income artisans earn helps pay for food, education, health care, and housing.

Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, on Thursday, October 15, 2009  will urge governments, donors, researchers, farmer groups, environmentalists, and others to set aside old divisions and join forces to help millions of the world's poorest farming families boost their yields and incomes so they can lift themselves out of hunger and poverty.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Howard G. Buffett Foundation on September 24^th unveiled a groundbreaking initiative to help poor farmers across the developing world significantly increase their incomes.

The UN is cooperating with the institute and will provide technical advice and assist in recruiting professional staff before the programme begins next March, as it shows the power of sport to help countries achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a set of targets to slash poverty and other global ills by 2015, the world body said.
