Slash-and.burn agricultural practices to clear spaces,
practiced by local colonists and campesinos, in order to prepare their
land for new efforts to reduce poverty. This practice threatens the
soil and the environment, due to the fact that theland loses all its
nutrients after the first crops, forcing farmers to move and clear new
spaces, expanding the agricultural frontier, and leaving spaces with
high degradation rates. A serious problem for developing countries
trying to balance their economical needs against environmental impact.
