World Health Organization (WHO) and UN-Water Call for Increased Investment in Drinking-Water and Safe Sanitation Systems

During World Water Week (25-30 August 2019) in Stockholm, The World Health Organization (WHO) and UN-Water called for an urgent increase in investment in strong drinking-water and sanitation systems.  They cited a report by WHO published on behalf of UN-Water that “reveals that weak government systems and a lack of human resources and funds are jeopardizing the delivery of water and sanitation services in the world’s poorest countries – and undermining efforts to ensure health for all.” The report,” Weak systems and funding gaps jeopardize drinking-water and sanitation in the world’s poorest countries,” UN-Water Global Assessment and Analysis of Sanitation and Drinking-Water 2019 (known as the GLAAS report), surveyed 115 countries and territories, representing 4.5 billion people. It showed that, in an overwhelming majority of countries, the implementation of water, sanitation and hygiene policies and plans is constrained by inadequate human and financial resources.

SIWI to Host UNESCO Centre in Sweden with Focus on Transboundary Water Cooperation

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), decided yesterday to establish a research center in Sweden with a focus on international water issues. With its focus on transboundary water cooperation, the center will be one of a kind. The center will be run by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) in collaboration with Uppsala University and the University of Gothenburg.

Finding Means to Meet Water and Food Needs at 2012 World Water Week

 

The 2012 World Water Week (WWW) in Stockholm, Sweden, organized by the Stockholm International Water Institute Stockholm (SIWI), undertook the task of addressing crucial concerns focusing on "Water and Food Security," with publications and videos prepared in advance to provide background and to stimulate conversations among the 2,500 WWW participants in order to build on knowledge what is successfully working and to advance positive action.
